A web application is software delivered through the browser — it has logged-in users, stored data, and interactive functionality, rather than just pages to read. Dashboards, client portals, booking systems, and SaaS products are web applications; a brochure site is not.

Website vs. web application
The line is state: a website shows the same content to everyone; an application knows who you are and changes accordingly. That difference drives everything downstream — authentication, databases, permissions, and security review — which is why application projects are scoped differently from website projects.
When a business needs one
