What is Title Tag?

Definition

A title tag is the HTML <title> element that names a web page. It appears in the browser tab and is the main source Google uses for the clickable headline, or "title link", in search results.

How title tags work

The title sits in the page's <head>, for example: <title>Emergency Plumber in Hamilton | 24/7 Service | Example Plumbing Co.</title>. Visitors never see it on the page itself, but they see it in tabs, bookmarks, shared links and search results.

Google does not always show your title exactly. Its title link documentation explains that it generates title links automatically from several sources: the <title> element, the main visible heading, <h1> elements, og:title tags, prominent text, anchor text, and links pointing to the page. When a title is vague, overly long, stuffed with keywords or out of step with the page, Google is more likely to replace it.

Google sets no character limit on titles but truncates them to fit the device width, so the important words belong at the front.

Why it matters for your business

The title is the first thing most searchers read about your page. A clear, specific title tells people they have found what they wanted, which earns clicks even if you rank below a competitor. It is also one of the strongest on-page signals of what the page is about.

Titles also travel. AI assistants, social shares and browser history all use them, so a page called "Home" or "Services" wastes visibility everywhere it appears.

Common mistakes

  • Using the same title across many pages, such as the company name alone.
  • Repeating keywords: "Plumber Hamilton, Hamilton Plumber, Plumbing Hamilton". Google's guidance warns against this.
  • Generic labels like "Home" or "Untitled".
  • A title that promises something the page's main heading does not match.
  • Putting the brand first on every page so the useful words get truncated.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a title tag be?

There is no official limit. A practical approach is to put the core topic in the first few words and keep the whole title concise enough that the meaning survives truncation.

Should the title tag match the H1?

They should agree but need not be identical. Google recommends making the main title visually prominent, for example in the first visible <h1>. The title can add the location or brand.

Does changing titles affect rankings?

It can, positively or negatively, so change titles deliberately and track results. Pair each title with a strong meta description, and include both in any SEO audit. When moving pages during a redesign, our redesign checklist explains how to carry titles across safely.
