What is Meta Description?

Definition

A meta description is an HTML tag that summarises a web page in a sentence or two. Search engines may show it as the snippet under the page's title in results, though they often write their own snippet from the page content instead.

How meta descriptions work

The tag sits in the page's <head> and is invisible to visitors on the page itself. It looks like this: <meta name="description" content="Same-day furnace repair in Vaughan and Richmond Hill. Licensed technicians, upfront quotes, evening appointments.">

Google's snippet documentation says snippets are primarily created from the page content itself, and that Google sometimes uses the meta description when it describes the page more accurately. The snippet can also change depending on the search: someone searching "furnace repair evening appointments" may see a line pulled from the page that mentions evening hours.

Google sets no fixed length limit, but it truncates snippets to fit the device width. Putting the most important information first protects it from being cut off.

Why it matters for your business

A meta description is advertising copy you control for free. When Google does use it, it is often the main thing a searcher reads before deciding which result to click. A clear, specific description can win the click from a competitor ranked above you.

Descriptions also appear when pages are shared in some messaging and social apps, and they give AI tools a concise statement of what the page covers. Writing them forces a useful discipline: if you cannot summarise a page in two sentences, the page may be trying to do too much.

Common mistakes

  • Using the same description across many pages. Google's guidance asks for a unique description for each page.
  • Writing a string of keywords instead of a sentence a person would want to read.
  • Promising something the page does not deliver, which drives quick exits.
  • Leaving out the details that make people choose: location, availability, price range or what makes the offer different.
  • Expecting the tag to lift rankings by itself. Its job is earning the click, not ranking the page.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta description be?

There is no official limit. Roughly one to two sentences works well, with the key point in the first half so truncation does not remove it.

Why does Google ignore my meta description?

Usually because Google judges another passage to match the search better, or because the description is generic, duplicated or inaccurate. Specific, page-accurate descriptions are used more often.

Should every page have one?

Yes, at least every page you want found in search. Pair each with a strong title tag, since the two appear together, and check both during an SEO review. For pages built at scale, such as product listings, descriptions can be generated from structured fields like name, price and location.
