What is PPC (Pay-Per-Click)?

Definition

Pay-per-click (PPC) is an online advertising model in which the advertiser pays each time someone clicks an ad, rather than paying for the ad to be shown. Google Ads search campaigns are the best-known example.

How pay-per-click works

On a search platform, you choose keywords that match what customers type, write ads, set a budget and decide how much you are willing to pay. When someone searches, the platform runs a quick auction among eligible advertisers. Your bid matters, but so does the quality and relevance of your ad and landing page.

Google provides a Quality Score from 1 to 10 for each keyword, based on expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Google notes that Quality Score is a diagnostic tool rather than a direct input to the auction, but the same factors it summarises do affect how ads perform.

Example: a family law firm in Oakville bids on "separation agreement lawyer Oakville". Its ad mentions a free 20-minute consultation and links to a page about separation agreements, not the homepage. Each click costs money, so the firm tracks how many clicks become booked consultations, then shifts budget toward the keywords that produce them.

The PPC model also appears beyond search: on social platforms, shopping listings and display networks, although many of those campaigns can also be bought on impressions instead.

Why it matters for your business

PPC is the fastest way to appear for high-intent searches, often within a day of launch, while SEO builds over months. You pay only when someone shows interest, you can start and stop at will, and results are measurable down to the keyword.

The catch is that clicks are not customers. Without conversion tracking, a good landing page and regular pruning of wasteful search terms, PPC can spend steadily without producing leads.

Common mistakes

  • Running broad keywords without negative keywords, so ads show for job seekers or DIY searches.
  • Sending all traffic to the homepage.
  • Measuring clicks and impressions instead of calls, forms and sales.
  • Letting the platform's automatic recommendations run without review.
  • Judging a campaign after a few days, before it has enough data.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a small business spend on PPC?

Work backwards from what a lead is worth and what you can afford per lead. Our explainer on cost per lead shows how to set that target before choosing a budget.

Is PPC better than SEO?

They do different jobs. PPC buys immediate visibility; SEO earns lasting visibility. Most businesses benefit from PPC while organic rankings grow.

What is the difference between PPC and Local Services Ads?

Local Services Ads charge per lead rather than per click and suit some service trades. Our comparison of Local Services Ads and Google Ads explains when each makes sense.
