What is Landing Page?

Definition

A landing page is a standalone web page built for one audience and one action, such as booking a call, requesting a quote or buying a product. It is usually where people arrive after clicking an ad, an email or a campaign link.

How a landing page works

Every click carries a promise. Someone searches for "emergency roof leak repair Mississauga", sees an ad that says "Same-day leak repair across Peel", and clicks. A landing page keeps that promise immediately: the headline repeats the offer, the first screen shows the service area and a short form, and the main navigation is trimmed so there is nowhere else to wander.

Below the first screen, the page answers the questions that stop people from acting: how fast, how much roughly, who does the work, what happens after the form is sent. Each section supports one call to action, repeated as the visitor scrolls.

A homepage has to serve everyone, from job seekers to existing customers. A landing page serves one person in one situation, which is why the two are written so differently.

Why it matters for your business

When you pay for traffic through pay-per-click advertising, the landing page decides whether that spend turns into enquiries. Google Ads also rates "landing page experience" as one of the three components of its Quality Score diagnostic, alongside expected click-through rate and ad relevance. A weak page can make the same clicks more expensive and less useful.

Dedicated pages also make measurement cleaner. If one page serves one campaign, you can see exactly which offer, audience and message produced the leads, and test changes without disturbing the rest of the site.

Common mistakes

  • Sending every ad to the homepage and hoping visitors find the right service.
  • Writing a headline that does not match the ad or search term that brought the visitor.
  • Asking for too much in the form: ten fields where three would do.
  • Offering several competing actions (call, chat, download, subscribe) with equal weight.
  • Building the page for desktop when most paid clicks arrive on a phone.

Frequently asked questions

How many landing pages does a business need?

One per distinct offer and audience is a sensible starting point. A plumber running separate campaigns for drain cleaning and water heater installation should have a page for each, because the visitor's question is different.

Should a landing page have navigation?

Usually very little. A logo and a way to contact you are enough for most paid-traffic pages. Removing the full menu keeps attention on the main action, though pages that also need to rank in organic search often keep light navigation for context.

How do I know if my landing page is working?

Track conversions, not just visits. Compare the share of visitors who complete the form or call, then run an A/B test on one element at a time. Our guide to landing page best practices covers the changes most worth testing first.
