What is Google Business Profile?

Definition

A Google Business Profile is a free listing that controls how a business appears in Google Search and Google Maps, showing its name, address, phone, hours, photos, reviews and services. It is the main way a local business gets into the map results for nearby searches.

How Google Business Profile works

You claim and verify the profile, confirming the business exists at the address or service area you list. Once verified, you can choose categories, describe services, add photos, post updates, answer questions and reply to reviews. Google combines that information with what it finds elsewhere on the web to decide when to show you.

Google's help page on improving local ranking says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the searcher or the location they mention. Prominence is how well known the business is, informed by factors such as links and reviews, and Google states that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.

Example: someone in Brampton searches "emergency plumber near me" at 10 p.m. Google shows three businesses in the map pack. The plumber with the right primary category, accurate after-hours times, recent photos and a steady stream of replied-to reviews is far more likely to appear, and to get the call, than a competitor with an unclaimed listing.

Why it matters for your business

For local service businesses, the profile often generates more calls than the website itself, because it appears exactly when people are ready to act. Many customers decide from the profile alone, comparing stars, photos and opening hours without ever clicking through.

It is also part of a wider local SEO picture: consistent business details across directories, location pages on your site and genuine reviews all reinforce one another. Our Google Business Profile optimisation guide covers the settings that matter, and how to get more Google reviews explains how to ask at the right moment.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a vague primary category, or stuffing keywords into the business name, which can lead to suspension.
  • Letting hours go stale over holidays, sending customers to a locked door.
  • Ignoring reviews, especially negative ones, instead of replying calmly and promptly.
  • Using a virtual office or someone else's address to appear in another city.
  • Setting up the profile once and never adding photos, posts or services again.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing the profile costs nothing. Google offers paid ad formats separately, but they are not required to appear in the map results.

Can a business without a storefront have a profile?

Yes. Service-area businesses, such as cleaners or contractors who travel to customers, can hide their address and list the areas they serve instead.

How often should I update my profile?

Check hours and details whenever anything changes, reply to reviews as they arrive and add fresh photos or posts regularly. Steady activity keeps the listing accurate and gives customers more reasons to choose you.
