What is Local SEO?
Definition
Local SEO is the work of making a business appear in search results for people nearby, especially in the Google map pack and Maps, when they search for a service plus a place or "near me".

How local SEO works
When someone in Etobicoke searches "emergency dentist", Google shows a map with a short list of businesses before most regular results. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence: how well a Business Profile matches the search, how far the business is from the searcher, and how well known the business is. Google also states that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.
In practice, local SEO improves each of those signals:
- Relevance: a complete Google Business Profile with the right primary category, services, hours and photos, plus service pages on your website that match how people search.
- Distance: an accurate address or service area. This is the one factor you cannot change with effort.
- Prominence: reviews, mentions on reputable local sites, consistent business details across directories, and general website authority.
The website matters as much as the profile. A clinic with one generic "Services" page will usually lose to a competitor with a clear page for each treatment and location.
Why it matters for your business
For trades, clinics, restaurants and professional firms, the map pack is often where the highest-intent customers decide. These searchers want to call or visit soon, so even a small move in visibility can change how many enquiries arrive each week.
Local results also feed AI assistants. When someone asks an assistant for a well-reviewed accountant in Brampton, the answer draws on the same profiles, reviews and websites.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a vague primary category, or stuffing keywords into the business name against Google's guidelines.
- Listing different phone numbers, addresses or names across the website and directories.
- Collecting reviews in bursts, then going silent for months, and never replying to them.
- Creating thin "city" pages that swap only the town name and add nothing useful.
- Ignoring the profile after setup: no new photos, posts or updated hours over holidays.
Frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take?
Profile fixes can show within weeks, while review growth and content take months. Our guide on how long SEO takes sets out realistic milestones.
Do I need a physical office to rank locally?
No. Service-area businesses can hide their address and define the areas they serve, though ranking is usually strongest close to the verified location.
