What is Large Language Model (LLM)?
Definition
A large language model (LLM) is an AI system trained on very large amounts of text to predict and generate language, which lets it answer questions, summarise documents, draft writing and follow instructions. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are built on LLMs.

How a large language model works
During training, the model reads enormous volumes of text and learns, statistically, which words and ideas tend to follow others. It does not store a searchable copy of that text. Instead it builds billions of internal settings that capture patterns in grammar, facts, reasoning and style.
When you type a prompt, the model produces a reply one small piece of text (a token) at a time, choosing each piece based on everything before it. That is why the same question can get slightly different answers, and why wording matters.
A concrete example: paste a 20-page supplier contract into an LLM and ask for the renewal date, notice period and price-change clause. It can pull those out in seconds. Ask it about your own refund policy without giving it the policy, though, and it will guess, because it has never seen your documents.
That gap is why business deployments usually connect the model to company data through retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) or to live systems through protocols such as MCP.
Why it matters for your business
LLMs are now the engine behind chat assistants, email triage, document processing and AI agents that complete multi-step tasks. Work that used to need a person reading every message (sorting enquiries, drafting replies, extracting details from forms) can often be handled first by a model and checked by staff.
They also change how customers find you. AI assistants answer questions directly and cite sources, so your website content now has to be clear enough for a model to quote accurately.
Common mistakes
- Letting a model answer customers from its general training rather than your verified information.
- Treating confident output as correct. LLMs can produce plausible but false statements.
- Pasting confidential client data into consumer tools without checking how that data is stored or used.
- Picking the largest, most expensive model for simple classification tasks a smaller one handles well.
- Skipping a human review step on anything legal, financial or customer-facing.
Frequently asked questions
Is an LLM the same as a chatbot?
No. The LLM is the underlying model; a chatbot is one product built on top of it. The same model can power a chat window, an email assistant or a background workflow with no chat interface at all.
Can an LLM learn my business?
Not by itself during normal use. The practical approach is to give it access to your documents and systems at the moment it answers, which keeps information current and easy to correct. Our explainer on how RAG works walks through the set-up.
Which LLM should a small business use?
It depends on the task, privacy needs and budget. Test two or three models on real examples of your work and compare accuracy and cost before committing.
