What is Lead Scoring?

Definition

Lead scoring is a method of ranking sales leads by assigning points for who a person is and what they have done, so a sales team can contact the most promising prospects first.

How lead scoring works

A scoring model combines two kinds of signal. Fit describes the lead: industry, company size, location, job title, budget range. Engagement describes behaviour: visiting the pricing page, opening emails, booking a demo, downloading a guide.

Each signal earns or loses points. A simple model for a commercial cleaning company might look like this:

  • Office of 50+ staff in the service area: +20
  • Requested a quote: +30
  • Visited the pricing page twice in a week: +10
  • Personal Gmail address on a B2B form: −5
  • No activity for 60 days: −15

When a lead crosses a threshold, say 50 points, the CRM flags it as sales-ready, assigns an owner and can trigger a task or alert. Leads below the line stay in marketing automation nurture sequences until their score rises.

Some platforms now offer predictive scoring, where a model studies past won and lost deals to weight signals automatically. It needs a reasonable history of closed deals to be reliable.

Why it matters for your business

Sales time is limited. Without scoring, reps tend to work leads in the order they arrived or by gut feel, so a hot enquiry can wait two days behind a student who downloaded a checklist. Scoring makes priorities explicit and consistent across the team.

It also creates a shared definition of a "good lead" between marketing and sales, which ends the familiar argument about lead quality and shows which campaigns produce buyers rather than just form fills.

Common mistakes

  • Inventing point values without checking them against deals you actually won.
  • Scoring only engagement, so a highly active lead who can never buy rises to the top.
  • Never subtracting points, so old leads keep high scores forever.
  • Building a model so complex that nobody on the sales team trusts or understands it.
  • Setting it once and never reviewing it as your offer and market change.

Frequently asked questions

Does a small business need lead scoring?

If you receive more leads than you can contact the same day, yes, even a five-rule model helps. If you get a handful a week, fast personal follow-up matters more than a formula. Our piece on speed to lead explains why response time is often the bigger lever.

Which tools support lead scoring?

Most mainstream CRMs, including HubSpot and Zoho, include scoring features on some plans. Our CRM comparison covers how they differ for small teams.

How often should scores be reviewed?

Quarterly is a practical rhythm. Compare the scores of leads that became customers with those that did not, and adjust the weights that failed to predict anything.
