What is Performance Max?

Definition

Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that uses Google's automation to show ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from a single campaign, optimising toward the conversion goals the advertiser sets.

How Performance Max works

Instead of building separate campaigns for each channel, you supply the ingredients and Google assembles the ads. According to Google's Performance Max overview, the main inputs are:

  • Asset groups: collections of headlines, descriptions, images, logos and videos, organised around a theme or audience.
  • Audience signals: hints about who is likely to convert, such as your customer list or website visitors. They guide learning; they do not restrict who sees the ads.
  • Conversion goals and budget: what counts as success and how much to spend.
  • Controls: brand exclusions, negative keywords and final URL expansion settings, which decide whether Google may send people to a landing page other than the one you chose.

Example: a Toronto furniture retailer links its product feed, uploads lifestyle photos and a short video, and adds a list of past buyers as an audience signal. Google then shows shopping ads on Search, video ads on YouTube and display ads elsewhere, shifting budget toward placements that produce online orders.

Reporting has improved since launch. Google now provides channel performance, asset and placement reporting, and a search terms report for Performance Max where irrelevant terms can be added as negatives.

Why it matters for your business

For e-commerce stores with a product feed and steady conversion data, Performance Max can reach buyers across more of Google with less manual work. For service businesses, it can find leads that keyword campaigns miss.

The trade-off is control. Automation optimises toward whatever you call a conversion, so poor tracking teaches it the wrong lesson quickly. It works best alongside a well-structured pay-per-click search campaign rather than as a blind replacement.

Common mistakes

  • Counting page views or button clicks as conversions, so the campaign optimises for cheap, low-value actions.
  • Leaving brand exclusions off, letting the campaign take credit for people already searching your name.
  • Uploading weak or too few assets, which limits where ads can appear.
  • Enabling final URL expansion without excluding pages like careers or blog posts.
  • Making large changes every few days, which keeps resetting the learning period.

Frequently asked questions

Is Performance Max good for small businesses?

It can be, provided conversion tracking is accurate and there is enough budget to generate data. Very small budgets often do better starting with focused search campaigns.

Can I see which searches triggered my ads?

Yes, through the search terms report, though visibility is still less granular than in standard search campaigns.

Does Performance Max replace Shopping campaigns?

For many retailers it now serves the same inventory. Test it against your existing set-up rather than switching everything at once, and see our Google Ads set-up guide for structure principles that apply to both.
