Want More Google Reviews? Ask at the Right Moment, Then Automate It
Practical, policy-compliant ways to get more Google reviews for your business — timing, direct links, automation, replies and what to avoid.
The short answer
Ask every happy customer, at the moment they're most satisfied, with a direct review link — and make it a routine rather than an occasional push. Never buy reviews, offer incentives for them or only ask customers you expect to be positive.
Why reviews matter so much
Reviews influence both whether you appear in local results and whether searchers choose you. A steady stream of recent reviews signals an active, trusted business.
Ask at the right moment
The best time is right after a job is completed or a problem is solved, while the experience is fresh. For project work, ask at handover; for appointments, ask the same day.

Use your profile's direct review link so customers land straight on the review form. Send it by text or email, put it on invoices and receipts, and add a QR code at your counter.
Automate the request
Manual asking is easy to forget. An automated message after each job or appointment — sent from your CRM or booking system — keeps reviews coming every week.
What to avoid
- Buying reviews or using review exchanges
- Offering discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews
- Asking only customers you expect to be positive (review gating)
- Posting reviews for yourself or competitors
These breach Google's policies and can lead to reviews being removed or your profile being restricted.
Reply to every review
Thank positive reviewers by name and respond calmly and helpfully to negative ones. Future customers read your replies as closely as the reviews.
Frequently asked questions
Can I offer a discount for a review?
No. Incentivised reviews are against Google's policies.
Should I reply to negative reviews?
Yes — briefly, professionally and with an offer to resolve the issue offline.
Can I get a bad Google review removed?
Only if it breaks Google's policies — for example spam, off-topic content, conflicts of interest or harassment. You can report it from your Business Profile, and Google decides. A review that is simply negative will usually stay. In that case, a calm, professional reply that offers to resolve the issue tells future customers more than the review itself.
How many Google reviews does a local business need?
There's no fixed number. Look at the businesses appearing in the map results for your main searches and aim to match or exceed their count and rating over time. Recency matters as well: a steady flow of new reviews each month signals an active business better than a large batch collected once and then left.
What should I do if a competitor leaves fake reviews?
Report each review through your Business Profile and keep a record of why you believe it's fake, such as no matching customer or a pattern of similar posts. Reply briefly and factually without accusing anyone, for example noting you can't find a record of the customer. Continuing to collect genuine reviews also reduces the impact of any single fake one.
