What is UX Design?
Definition
UX design (user experience design) is the process of shaping how a product or website works for the people using it, from understanding their goals to planning flows, content and structure, so they can complete tasks easily and with confidence.

How UX design works
UX work usually moves through a loop of research, design and testing:
- Research: interviews, analytics, support tickets and observation reveal what users are trying to do and where they get stuck.
- Structure: information architecture groups content in the way users think about it, and user flows map each step of a task.
- Wireframes and prototypes: simple layouts test ideas before any visual polish or code.
- Usability testing: watching real people attempt real tasks, then fixing what trips them up.
Example: an HVAC company's quote form gets plenty of visits but few submissions. Session recordings show people abandoning it at a required field asking for the furnace model number, which most homeowners do not know. The UX fix is not a new colour scheme; it is making that field optional, adding "Not sure? We'll check on site", and moving the address question earlier because users expect it. Submissions can then be compared before and after with an A/B test.
The visual layer that follows, styling each screen, is UI design.
Why it matters for your business
Every unnecessary step, confusing label or dead end costs leads, sales or staff time. UX design finds those costs and removes them. It is often the cheapest route to better conversion rates, because it improves results from traffic you already have rather than buying more.
For internal tools and customer portals, good UX also reduces training time, errors and support calls.
Common mistakes
- Designing from internal assumptions without speaking to a single customer.
- Organising navigation around the company's departments instead of customer tasks.
- Asking for information you do not need yet, especially on forms.
- Testing only with colleagues who already know how the product works.
- Treating UX as a one-off project instead of an ongoing habit of measuring and improving.
Frequently asked questions
Is UX design only for apps?
No. Brochure websites, checkouts, booking flows, emails and even phone menus all have a user experience that can be designed well or badly.
How many users do I need to test with?
Small rounds of testing with a handful of representative users regularly surface the biggest problems. Fix those, then test again.
How does accessibility fit into UX?
It is part of it. Designing for people with disabilities, guided by WCAG, usually improves the experience for everyone. Our article on AI customer service that works shows the same principle applied to support flows.
