What is XML Sitemap?

Definition

An XML sitemap is a file, usually at a URL such as example.com/sitemap.xml, that lists the pages on a website you want search engines to find, along with optional details such as when each page last changed.

How an XML sitemap works

Search engines discover most pages by following links. A sitemap adds a direct list, which helps crawlers find pages that are new, deep in the site or poorly linked. Each entry contains a <loc> (the page URL) and can include <lastmod> (the date it last meaningfully changed).

Google's sitemap documentation sets out the key rules:

  • A single sitemap can hold up to 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed. Larger sites split them and list the parts in a sitemap index file.
  • Google ignores the <priority> and <changefreq> tags.
  • Google uses <lastmod> only when it is consistently and verifiably accurate, so it should reflect real content changes, not a copyright year update.
  • Submitting a sitemap is a hint, not a guarantee that pages will be crawled or indexed.

Example: an online plant shop adds 40 new product pages each spring. Its platform regenerates the sitemap automatically with accurate lastmod dates, and the sitemap is submitted in Google Search Console and referenced in robots.txt. The new pages are found quickly instead of waiting for crawlers to follow links from category pages.

Why it matters for your business

If search engines cannot find a page, it cannot rank. A clean sitemap speeds up discovery after launches, redesigns and new content, and it gives you a reporting tool: Search Console shows how many submitted URLs were indexed and flags problems.

It also acts as a statement of which pages you consider important. A sitemap full of redirects, duplicates and thin pages sends mixed signals and wastes crawl attention.

Common mistakes

  • Including URLs that redirect, return errors or are marked noindex.
  • Listing non-canonical versions of pages instead of the canonical URL.
  • Setting every lastmod to today's date on each build, which teaches Google to ignore it.
  • Forgetting to update the sitemap after a redesign or domain change.
  • Submitting the sitemap once and never checking the indexing report again.

Frequently asked questions

Does a small website need an XML sitemap?

A small, well-linked site can be crawled without one, but a sitemap is easy to generate and helps with new pages, so most sites should have one.

Is an XML sitemap the same as llms.txt?

No. A sitemap is a full list of URLs for search crawlers; llms.txt is a short, curated guide for AI tools. They can coexist.

Where should I submit my sitemap?

Submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt. It is a routine step in any SEO set-up or site redesign.
