Website Redesign Cost in Canada: What Drives It, and How to Keep Your Rankings

Website redesign cost for Canadian businesses: sourced market ranges, the six factors that drive price, redesign vs rebuild, and how to keep your rankings.

The short answer

Website redesign cost in Canada depends far more on what the redesign has to do than on how many pages it has. Published 2026 market guides put a visual refresh of a small business site at roughly US$3,000 to US$15,000, a strategic redesign with new structure and custom design at US$15,000 to US$50,000, and projects with custom functionality or e-commerce well above that. Six factors drive the number, and the cheapest way to lose money is to skip the redirect work that protects your Google rankings.

Website redesign cost: the market ranges, with their caveats

Two detailed 2026 pricing guides, both published by agencies, give overlapping tiers. Tenet's redesign cost breakdown (December 2025) lists a basic template-based redesign of 5 to 15 pages at US$3,000 to US$15,000, a moderate semi-custom redesign of 15 to 50 pages at US$15,000 to US$40,000, an advanced fully custom project of 50 to 100 pages with e-commerce or portals at US$40,000 to US$80,000, and enterprise work from US$80,000 upward. Expedition's redesign cost guide (2026) is similar: a basic refresh at US$5,000 to US$15,000 over four to eight weeks, a strategic redesign at US$15,000 to US$50,000 over ten to twenty weeks, and complex redesigns with custom functionality at US$50,000 to US$150,000.

Three caveats. These are US-dollar figures from firms that sell redesigns. They describe typical market ranges, not what any particular studio will quote you. And in our experience Toronto / GTA agencies quote in similar bands in Canadian dollars, which makes the lower tiers a little cheaper here in real terms. Flowmatix does not publish prices; every project is quoted as a fixed price in writing after we understand the scope.

Six things that actually drive the price

  1. How much is being redesigned. A refresh keeps your structure and content management system and updates the look and key pages. A strategic redesign rethinks the page structure, writes new content and often changes platform. Expedition's guide notes that redesigns typically cost 15 to 25 percent more than a comparable new build because of the migration and redirect work.
  2. Content. Who is writing the words and taking the photographs? Expedition puts copywriting at US$3,000 to US$15,000 and photography at US$2,000 to US$10,000 as separate line items. Reusing existing content is the single biggest saving available.
  3. Design depth. Customising a template is cheaper than designing every page around a customer decision. Expedition estimates custom design adds US$5,000 to US$15,000.
  4. Integrations. CRM syncing (US$2,000 to US$8,000 in the same guide), booking, quoting, payment gateways and marketing automation each add build and testing time.
  5. Migration and SEO protection. Mapping old URLs, writing redirects, carrying over metadata and testing. Expedition cites a few thousand dollars for small sites and US$20,000 or more for sites with significant search traffic.
  6. Who is doing it. Freelancer, boutique studio or large agency. Our comparison of freelancer vs agency web design covers the trade-offs.

Redesign, rebuild or replatform?

The words get used loosely, and the price difference between them is large, so pin down which one you are buying.

OptionWhat changesWhat staysWhen it fits
RefreshVisual design, key page layouts, some copyPlatform, URLs, structure, most contentSite works but looks dated; rankings are healthy
RedesignDesign, page structure, content, often navigationUsually the platform; URLs change in partSite under-performs; offer or audience has shifted
Rebuild / replatformEverything, including the content management system and hostingYour domain and the content you choose to carry overPlatform is slow, insecure, unsupported or blocking features

A useful test: if your complaints are about appearance, you want a refresh. If they are about results (enquiries, rankings, conversion), you want a redesign. If they are about the technology (it is slow, it breaks, the plugin is abandoned, nobody can edit it), you want a rebuild. Many owners ask for a refresh and need a rebuild, which is where budgets go wrong. Our article on website maintenance costs helps you judge whether the current platform is worth keeping.

How to keep your rankings through a redesign

This is the part that separates a redesign that pays for itself from one that quietly costs you a year of leads. Google's own guidance on site moves with URL changes is clear about the mechanics:

  • Build a complete map of old URLs to new URLs, including images and downloads, starting from your sitemap, analytics and server logs.
  • Use server-side permanent redirects (301 or 308), send each old URL to its final destination to avoid chains, and do not redirect many pages to the homepage.
  • "Keep the redirects for as long as possible, generally at least 1 year", and consider keeping them indefinitely for users.
  • Change one thing at a time. Google's example is to move domains first and change the layout later rather than doing both at once.
  • "Expect temporary fluctuation in site ranking during the move", and monitor Search Console and analytics on both old and new URLs.
  • Submit a Change of Address in Search Console only if the domain or subdomain is changing; it is not needed for redesigns on the same domain.

In practice the work is unglamorous: a spreadsheet of every page, its traffic, its rankings and its new home; a 301 redirect for each; titles and descriptions carried over or deliberately improved; and a crawl of the new site before launch to catch broken links. Our full website redesign checklist covers every step, and it is the process behind our own website redesign service. If a quote does not mention redirects or a URL map, ask why. That omission is the most expensive thing in web design, and it never appears on the invoice.

Questions that change the quote

Before you ask anyone for a price, answer these yourself. Each one moves the number materially.

  • How many pages do you really need? Most small business sites carry pages nobody visits. Analytics will tell you which.
  • Will you reuse existing copy and photos, or do you need new ones?
  • Which systems must the site talk to: CRM, booking, payments, accounting?
  • Do any pages currently rank and bring enquiries? Those need the most careful migration.
  • Does accessibility law apply to you? Ontario organisations with 50 or more employees must meet WCAG 2.0 AA on public websites, and building it in during a redesign is far cheaper than retrofitting.
  • Who will maintain the site afterwards, and what does that cost per year?

Key takeaways

  • Published 2026 market guides put small-business redesigns at roughly US$3,000 to US$15,000 for a refresh and US$15,000 to US$50,000 for a strategic redesign; custom functionality pushes higher.
  • Content, design depth, integrations and migration work drive the price more than page count.
  • Decide whether you need a refresh, a redesign or a rebuild before you request quotes; they are different products.
  • Protect rankings with a full URL map and permanent redirects kept for at least a year, following Google's site-move guidance.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to redesign a small business website in Canada?

Published 2026 agency guides put a basic refresh at about US$3,000 to US$15,000 and a strategic redesign at US$15,000 to US$50,000, with projects involving custom functionality or e-commerce costing more. Canadian agencies tend to quote in similar bands in Canadian dollars. Treat these as typical market ranges; the real number depends on content, design depth, integrations and migration work.

Will a website redesign hurt my Google rankings?

It can if URLs change without redirects, or if content that ranked is removed. Google advises mapping every old URL to a new one, using permanent 301 or 308 redirects kept for at least a year, changing one thing at a time, and expecting temporary fluctuation. Done properly, most sites recover within weeks and often improve.

Is it cheaper to redesign a website or build a new one?

A new build on a clean platform is sometimes cheaper than a redesign that has to work around old technology, because migration and redirect work add cost. One 2026 guide estimates redesigns run 15 to 25 percent more than a comparable new build. The right choice depends on whether your platform is worth keeping.
