AI for Trades and Home Services: Catch Every Call, Quote Faster, Earn Reviews
AI for trades and home-service businesses: answer missed calls, quote faster, fill the schedule and earn honest reviews, plus a simple 90-day plan.
The short answer
AI for trades and home-service businesses earns its keep in four places: answering calls and messages you would otherwise miss, turning site notes into quotes faster, keeping the schedule full, and asking every happy customer for a review. Customers now expect a fast reply, and about half of owners already use AI somewhere in the business. The guardrails are simple: never let a bot promise a price it cannot honour, and never fake or filter reviews.
Plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, roofers, cleaners and lawn-care crews share a problem: the person who should be answering the phone is usually on a ladder, under a sink or driving between jobs. Jobber's 2026 Home Service Trends Report, based on a December 2025 survey of 1,050 US home-service owners, found that 52% now use AI in day-to-day operations. Among them, the top uses were quoting (54%), invoicing (52%) and business writing (51%). Jobber is a field-service software vendor, so read the numbers as a useful snapshot rather than a census, but the direction is clear.
Why speed decides who gets the job
The same Jobber survey asked customers how quickly they expect a reply. More than half expect a response within the hour, and 28% expect one immediately. Meanwhile, 60% of businesses said they usually respond the same day and only 20% within an hour. That gap is where jobs are lost, especially on urgent calls such as no heat or a burst pipe, where the customer simply rings the next company on the list.
Four jobs AI for trades does well
1. Answering missed calls and messages
An AI receptionist picks up when you cannot, takes the address and problem, checks your calendar and books a visit or flags an emergency for a call-back. A text-back on missed calls does a lighter version of the same thing. Our guide to AI receptionist costs in Canada covers what each option runs.
2. Faster quotes
Dictate notes and measurements on site, and AI turns them into a tidy quote using your own price book. The price must come from your rates, not the model's guess. A person approves every quote before it goes out.
3. A fuller schedule
Automated confirmations, "on my way" texts, reminders for seasonal maintenance and rebooking prompts for past customers all reduce no-shows and empty days. None of this needs a clever model; it needs your scheduling, CRM and messaging connected.
4. Reviews, asked for at the right moment
Jobber found 51% of customers rank positive reviews among the most important factors in choosing a provider, second only to price. Sending a review request when the job is marked complete, while the customer is pleased, is the simplest lift. Our guide on getting more Google reviews covers timing and wording.

Before buying anything new, look at the tools you run today. Field-service platforms, phone systems and accounting software have added AI features for quoting, call summaries, invoice reminders and review requests, and many owners have never switched them on. Our guide to the AI already inside your CRM and tools shows how to audit them in an afternoon.
The gaps usually appear between systems: the call is answered but the job never reaches the calendar, or the job is completed but the review request never goes out because the customer record lives somewhere else. Connecting those steps often does more than adding another AI product. A useful test is to follow one real job from first call to paid invoice and count how many times someone retypes the same name, address or price. Each retype is a place where an automation, with or without AI, can take over and where errors currently creep in.
What to avoid
- Bots that quote firm prices. If your assistant tells a customer "a furnace tune-up is $X," expect to honour it. A BC tribunal held Air Canada responsible for a wrong answer from its chatbot in Moffatt v. Air Canada, rejecting the idea that the bot was a separate entity. Give ranges and "the technician confirms on site."
- Review gating. Google's Maps user-generated content policy says businesses may not "discourage or prohibit negative reviews, or selectively solicit positive reviews from customers," and may not offer discounts or freebies in exchange. Ask everyone, or no one.
- AI-written fake reviews. The US Federal Trade Commission's final rule on fake reviews names AI-generated fake reviews explicitly and allows civil penalties. In Canada, the Competition Bureau has warned about fake reviews, including organised efforts by companies to boost their own ratings or lower a competitor's. Using AI to draft a reply to a real review is fine; using it to write the review is not.
- Texting without consent. Promotional texts and emails fall under CASL. Service messages about a booked job are different from marketing; keep them separate.
A simple first 90 days
| Period | Set up | Measure |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 30 | AI answering or missed-call text-back, connected to your calendar | Calls answered, jobs booked after hours |
| Days 31 to 60 | Quote drafts from site notes using your price book; booking confirmations and reminders | Time from visit to quote sent, no-show rate |
| Days 61 to 90 | Automatic review request on job completion; seasonal rebooking messages to past customers | New reviews per month, repeat bookings |
If you also run paid search, pair faster answering with tighter campaigns; our guide to Google Ads for contractors explains the set-up. More examples for your trade are on our trades and home services page.
Key takeaways
- Most customers expect a reply within an hour; most businesses reply the same day. AI closes that gap.
- Quoting is the top AI use among owners who have adopted it, but prices must come from your own price book.
- Ask every customer for a review, never filter or pay for them, and never let AI write them.
- Start with call answering, then quotes, then reviews and rebooking.
Frequently asked questions
Is an AI receptionist worth it for a small trades business?
If you regularly miss calls while on jobs or after hours, compare the monthly cost with the value of one or two recovered jobs; for many trades that maths works quickly. Track answered calls and booked jobs for 30 days to check.
Can AI write my quotes?
It can draft them from your notes and price book. Review each one before sending, especially materials, scope and exclusions.
Can I offer a discount for a Google review?
No. Google's policy prohibits offering incentives such as payments, discounts or free services in exchange for reviews.
