Brand Mentions vs Backlinks: What Actually Gets You Recommended by AI Assistants
Brand mentions vs backlinks for AI search: what the data shows, what is still speculation, and where a small business should put its effort in 2026.
The short answer
On brand mentions vs backlinks, the best available data shows how often your brand is mentioned across the web tracks AI visibility more closely than raw backlink counts. That is a correlation, not a confirmed mechanism, and backlinks still feed the search rankings that AI tools draw on. The practical answer is to earn genuine coverage that names you, ideally with a link, rather than choosing one over the other.
What the data says about brand mentions vs backlinks
The most-cited study is Ahrefs' analysis of about 75,000 brands, published May 26, 2025. It measured which factors correlate with how often a brand is mentioned in Google's AI Overviews, using Spearman correlation. Branded web mentions came out on top at 0.664; the number of backlinks scored 0.218.
Three caveats matter before you rebuild your marketing plan around this chart:
- Correlation is not causation. Ahrefs says so itself. Big, well-known brands get mentioned a lot and also get cited a lot; fame could drive both.
- It covers one surface. The study looked at AI Overviews only, not ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.
- The sample skews larger. Ahrefs filtered to domains with a Domain Rating above 40. Many small local businesses sit below that.
Known, likely and speculative: an honest split
| Claim | Status | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Google's AI features are built on its core Search systems | Known | Google's generative AI features guide |
| Links still help Google understand and rank pages | Known | Google's ranking systems guide says PageRank remains part of core ranking |
| Fake or manufactured mentions do not help | Known | Google says inauthentic mentions are filtered by spam systems |
| Frequently mentioned brands appear more often in AI Overviews | Likely | Ahrefs correlation study |
| Language models "learn" brands from mentions in training data | Plausible, unproven for any specific brand | No AI company publishes how individual brands are weighted |
| Unlinked mentions are now worth more than links | Speculative | Not supported by any official statement |

Most AI answers about current products and services are grounded in live search results. Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews retrieve pages through Google's own index, where link analysis is still part of ranking. ChatGPT's search features surface sites crawled by OAI-SearchBot, and pages that rank and get crawled are the ones available to cite. If your pages are hard to find in search, they are hard to find for AI.
What has changed is the type of link worth having. A link from a respected local publication that also names and describes your business does double duty: it is a backlink and a brand mention in context. A link from a directory nobody reads, or a paid link network, does neither. Google's spam policies still treat buying links for ranking as link spam unless they are marked sponsored or nofollow.
Why mentions matter, even without a link
When an assistant answers "who are the best commercial cleaners in Vaughan?", it is assembling a view from many sources: reviews, local news, directory listings, forum threads and business sites. A brand that shows up consistently, described the same way, in several independent places is easier to recommend with confidence. That is the logic behind the mentions correlation, and it fits the citation patterns covered in why AI answers cite Reddit and YouTube.
Mentions also need context. "Flowline Plumbing, a family-run emergency plumber serving Brampton since 2009" teaches far more than a logo on a sponsor page.
A worked example: one month, two approaches
Picture a 12-person landscaping company in Oakville with a modest marketing budget. Approach A spends it on a link package: 20 guest posts on general blogs with keyword-rich anchors. Approach B spends the same on three things: a short seasonal data piece (what plants survived the winter in Halton, based on its own job records), pitching it to two local outlets and a trade newsletter, and sponsoring a community clean-up with a write-up on the organiser's site.
Approach A may add 20 referring domains, but few people read those blogs, the anchors look manufactured, and none of the pages describe the business in a way an assistant would trust. Approach B might produce three or four links, yet each one sits on a page that names the company, its location and its expertise, which is exactly the kind of independent description AI answers draw on. It also gives real people a reason to search for the brand by name.
This is an illustration, not a measured result. The point is that the question is rarely "mentions or links" but "which activity produces credible pages that talk about us".
Where to put your effort in 2026
- Earn coverage that names you and what you do. Expert quotes for local and trade media, data you publish yourself, community sponsorships with a write-up. This is classic digital PR.
- Describe yourself consistently. Same business name, category and service area across your site, profiles and listings.
- Grow branded demand. Branded search volume also correlated in the Ahrefs study. Email, social and offline marketing all feed it.
- Keep earning relevant links. Partners, suppliers, associations and genuine press. Skip link schemes.
- Measure both. Track referring domains and unlinked mentions monthly, plus AI visibility using the methods in our guide to getting cited by ChatGPT.
Key takeaways
- Branded web mentions correlated far more strongly with AI Overview visibility (0.664) than backlink counts (0.218) in the largest public study.
- That is correlation on one Google surface, not proof of how any AI weighs brands.
- Backlinks still shape the search results AI tools are grounded in.
- The best investment is coverage that both names you and links to you.
Frequently asked questions
Should I stop building backlinks?
No. Stop building low-quality ones. Relevant links from real publications still support rankings, which in turn support AI visibility. If a tactic would only make sense because of the link, and nobody would ever read the page, it is probably not worth doing.
Do unlinked brand mentions help SEO?
Google has not said it uses unlinked mentions as a ranking signal. They plausibly help AI systems understand your brand, but treat that as likely, not confirmed.
How do I find out where my brand is mentioned?
Set up Google Alerts for your business name, and use an SEO tool's mentions or brand-monitoring feature to find unlinked mentions you can build on.
