Google's Official Page Box: How to Be the Official Source for Your Business
Google is testing an official page box at the top of AI answers. Learn how to make your own site the clear official source for your business's key tasks.
The short answer
Google is testing an official page box at the top of some AI Mode and AI Overviews answers that points people to the one or two official pages for a task, with a note on why each link is useful. Google has not published how it chooses those pages, so the dependable preparation is to make your own site unambiguous as your business's home: one clear page per customer task, matching facts everywhere, and the identity signals Google already documents.
What the official page box is (and what it is not)
Google announced the test on October 15, 2026 in "More ways to connect with the web from Search". It describes a dedicated section at the top of a response that surfaces official pages, with context on why each link is useful. FoneArena's coverage adds that it targets queries where people need to complete a specific task or find exact information held on one or two official websites.
Three things are worth stating plainly, as of October 2026:
- It is a test. Not every searcher sees it, and it may change.
- Google has not listed the queries it appears on or the signals it uses to decide what counts as "official".
- It is not a paid placement and there is no application form.
Everything below is therefore preparation built on what Google does document about identifying an organisation's website, not a recipe for a guaranteed slot.
Which searches could trigger it for a business
The description fits task and fact queries about a named organisation. For a small or mid-size business, the likely candidates are:
| Customer intent | Example search | The page that should win |
|---|---|---|
| Book or buy | "[clinic name] book appointment" | Your booking page |
| Check a policy | "[store] return policy" | Your returns page |
| Get a price | "[software] pricing" | Your pricing page |
| Get help | "[brand] reset password" | Your help article |
| Contact or visit | "[restaurant] hours Sunday" | Your contact/locations page and Business Profile |
Notice that most of these searches include your brand name. That means the competition for the slot is not other businesses in your category; it is every other site that talks about you, from review platforms to booking marketplaces.
The risk is not that nothing shows. The risk is that a reseller, a directory or an outdated aggregator looks more complete than your own site, and the box points there instead.

Google already has documented ways for a site to say "this is the organisation's home". Its Organization structured data guide says the markup on your home page or About page helps Google understand your administrative details and tell you apart from organisations with similar names. Recommended properties include name, url, logo, address, telephone and sameAs links to your official profiles elsewhere.
Google's site names documentation covers the other half: WebSite markup on the home page states the name you want shown for your site. If your business name is generic ("Precision Plumbing"), these two pieces are how Google separates you from the five other businesses with the same name.
If your organisation has a knowledge panel, Google lets you claim it by signing in to an official profile such as Search Console or YouTube. Local businesses with a storefront or service area should manage a Google Business Profile instead; our Business Profile optimisation guide covers that. For markup detail, see schema markup for AI search.
Step 2: Remove the contradictions
An AI system choosing an "official" answer will struggle if your site says you close at 6, your Business Profile says 5 and a directory says 7. Pick a source of truth for hours, prices, policies and service areas, then update every listing you control. Kill orphaned old pages: a 2022 price list that still ranks is a liability. Point retired URLs to their replacements with redirects and make sure each topic has one canonical URL.
Step 3: Give every customer task its own clear page
The official page box is about tasks, so build for tasks. For each common job:
- Use a title that names the brand and the task ("Book an appointment at Lakeview Dental").
- Answer the core question in the first two sentences: what it costs, how long it takes, what to bring.
- Keep the action itself on the page, not behind a PDF or a pop-up that crawlers cannot read.
- Link each task page from the main navigation or footer so it is easy to find.
Help content buried in an app, booking flows hosted on a third-party domain with no page on your own site, and pricing that only exists as an image are common gaps on small business sites. Each one makes a third party look more complete than you. If those describe your site, the website redesign checklist shows how to restructure without losing rankings.
Step 4: Make sure Google is allowed to use you
Google's guide to optimising for generative AI features sets two baseline conditions: pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and the site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console. Inclusion is the default, but check Settings in Search Console. A nosnippet tag on a key page will also keep it out.
Checklist
- Organization and WebSite structured data on the home page, with accurate
sameAslinks. - Knowledge panel claimed if one exists; Business Profile verified for local businesses.
- Hours, prices and policies identical across site, Business Profile and directories.
- One indexable page per customer task, answer in the first two sentences.
- No
nosnippeton task pages; generative AI features left on in Search Console.
Frequently asked questions
Can I request to be listed in Google's official page box?
No. As of October 2026 there is no form or setting for it. Google selects pages itself, and the feature is still a test.
Will a reseller or marketplace beat my own site?
It can happen for any search feature if their page is more complete or better known. Having a clear, accurate page for each task on your own domain is the best defence.
Does structured data guarantee I'm treated as official?
No. Google says structured data is not required for AI features and does not guarantee display. It helps Google identify your organisation, which is a sensible foundation.
