Google's October 2026 AI Mode Update: 5 Changes and What Your Website Should Do

Google's October 2026 AI Mode update adds more links, an official-page test, news carousels and creator profiles. Here is what it means for your website.

The short answer

The Google AI Mode update announced on October 15, 2026 makes links inside AI Mode and AI Overviews more visible: more inline links placed higher, a test of an "official pages" section at the top of some answers, wider news carousels, bigger related-article links and clickable creator names on video results. For a business website, it rewards being the clear, crawlable, official source for your own facts and offers, and it still gives you no click data for AI results in Search Console.

What Google announced on October 15, 2026

In a post titled "More ways to connect with the web from Search", Google's VP of Product Management Hema Budaraju described five changes to AI Mode and AI Overviews. Some are rolling out; two are explicitly tests. Here is the split, as of October 2026:

ChangeStatusWho it matters to most
More inline links, shown higher in responsesLive (Google calls it a "continued and substantial" increase)Every site that gets cited
"Official pages" section at the top of some answersTestBrands, service businesses, anyone with a sign-up, booking or help page
News carousels for timely articles, highlighting Preferred SourcesRolling out to more locations and languagesPublishers and businesses that publish news
Related-article links with image thumbnailsLive on some responsesContent publishers and blogs
Clickable creator and publisher names on AI Mode video resultsTestBusinesses with a YouTube or video presence

The same post says the number of people using Preferred Sources has grown more than 7x since the start of the year, and that the clickable creator names lead to Google Search profiles rather than to creators' own websites. That last detail matters: the click stays on Google.

Google gave no click-through figures for any of these changes. That is worth remembering when you read commentary claiming the update "brings traffic back". It may, for some sites, but nobody outside Google can measure that yet with confidence.

The Google AI Mode update in plain terms: more links, but on Google's terms

Google has been criticised for AI answers that satisfy the searcher without a click. This update is its response: links become easier to see and tap. It does not change the basic rule of AI Mode, which is that Google picks a small number of sources per answer. If you are not one of them, more prominent links help your competitors, not you.

We have covered why the two surfaces cite different pages in AI Mode vs AI Overviews, and how to tell whether AI answers are eating your clicks in our AI Overviews traffic guide. This update changes the layout, not the selection logic, so that advice still stands.

The change most businesses should watch: the official-pages test

According to FoneArena's summary of the announcement, the test targets queries where someone needs to complete a specific task, or find exact information that lives on one or two official websites. Think "how do I cancel my membership with [brand]", "[clinic] new patient form" or "[software] pricing".

That is a different game from ranking a blog post. Google is trying to identify which site is the authority on a business, and then point straight at the right page on it. If your booking, pricing, returns or contact pages are thin, hidden behind scripts, or contradicted by old third-party listings, a reseller or directory may look more "official" than you do. We break down how to prepare in our guide to the official-page box.

News carousels and creator profiles: who benefits

News carousels mostly affect publishers. If your business runs a newsroom, an industry blog with timely coverage, or a trade publication, the Preferred Sources link-up is worth acting on; see whether to ask customers to add you as a preferred source.

The creator-name test sends people to a Google Search profile. Google opened those profiles to US publishers and creators with at least 10,000 followers across YouTube, Instagram, X or TikTok in September 2026. Canadian businesses cannot claim one yet. For now, the practical step is to make sure your video titles, descriptions and channel "About" text name your business and link to your site, so a viewer who lands on the profile can still find you.

What your website should do this quarter

  1. Audit your "task" pages. List the ten things customers most often try to do with you: book, get a quote, check pricing, find hours, cancel, return, log in. Each should have one clear, indexable page with a plain title and a direct answer near the top.
  2. Make your facts match everywhere. Hours, prices, service areas and policies should agree across your site, Google Business Profile and major directories.
  3. Write sentences worth linking. Inline links attach to specific claims. Pages with concrete numbers, steps and definitions give Google something to attach a link to.
  4. Check you are eligible. Google's Search generative AI control in Search Console includes sites by default. Confirm nobody switched it off.
  5. Measure what you can. Search Console's generative AI performance report shows impressions, not clicks. Pair it with landing-page data in analytics, as we explain in how to measure AI search traffic.

Key takeaways

  • The October 15, 2026 update increases and raises links in AI Mode and AI Overviews; the official-pages section and creator links are tests.
  • Selection still decides everything. More visible links only help sites Google already chooses to cite.
  • The official-pages test rewards businesses whose own site is the clearest source for bookings, pricing, policies and help.
  • Creator names link to Google profiles, which are US-only and follower-gated as of October 2026.
  • Search Console still reports AI impressions without AI clicks, so analytics remains your click source.

Frequently asked questions

Is the official-pages box live for everyone?

No. As of October 2026, Google describes it as a test on some queries. It may change or disappear, so treat it as a signal of direction rather than a feature to build around.

Will this update bring back the traffic I lost to AI Overviews?

Possibly some, if your pages are already cited. Google has not published click data for the change, and Search Console does not separate AI clicks, so judge it by your own landing-page trends over the next few months.

Do I need special markup to get inline links?

No. Google's guidance says there are no extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. Clear, specific, crawlable pages are what count.
