How to Measure AI Search Traffic When Search Console Won't Show AI Clicks
Search Console shows AI impressions but no AI clicks. Here is how to measure AI search traffic with GA4's AI Assistant channel, landing pages and brand data.
The short answer
To measure AI search traffic in October 2026, combine four sources: Search Console's generative AI report for Google AI impressions, GA4's AI Assistant channel for clicks from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and similar tools, landing-page and branded-search trends for the indirect effect, and a monthly manual check of what assistants say about you. No single tool gives the full picture, and Google still does not report clicks from AI Overviews or AI Mode separately.
Why it is hard to measure AI search traffic
There are really two kinds of AI search, and they report differently.
- Google's AI features (AI Overviews and AI Mode). Google's AI features documentation says clicks from these are counted inside the normal Performance report under the "Web" search type. They are not split out.
- Standalone assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot. Clicks from these arrive as referrals in your analytics, when the assistant passes a referrer. Some do not, and those visits land in "Direct".
Then there is the part no tool sees: someone reads an AI answer, remembers your name and searches for you later, or calls without visiting at all.
Layer 1: Search Console's generative AI report (impressions only)
Google launched a Generative AI performance report in Search Console in June 2026 and says it reached all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. It shows how many times links to your site were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date. It does not show clicks.
Use it to answer three questions:
- Which pages does Google use in AI answers at all?
- Are AI impressions growing or shrinking month on month?
- Do pages with rising AI impressions also show falling organic click-through rate? That pattern suggests answers are satisfying people without a visit, which we cover in our AI Overviews traffic guide.
If the report is missing, Google says your site may have too few AI impressions, or it may have been excluded via the Search generative AI setting.

GA4 now has an "AI Assistant" channel in its default channel group, covering visits from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok. Google's definition explicitly excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Search Engine Journal reported the change in May 2026 and noted these sessions get the medium "ai-assistant".
Two practical steps:
- Check what is missing. Google has not published its full list of recognised assistants. Look at Referral traffic for domains such as
perplexity.aiorclaude.aithat may still sit outside the channel. - Build a custom channel group if you need it. Add a rule matching those domains, placed above the Referral rule, so they are counted together.
Then look at behaviour, not just volume: which landing pages AI visitors arrive on, how long they stay, and whether they submit forms or call. Assistant visitors often land deep in the site on a specific service or pricing page.
Layer 3: Landing pages, branded search and direct traffic
Because Google blends AI Mode and AI Overviews clicks into normal organic data, the most useful Google-side signal is page-level. Compare, for your top 20 pages, the AI impressions trend from Layer 1 with clicks and click-through rate from the standard Performance report.
Next, track demand for your name. In Search Console, filter queries containing your brand. If AI answers mention you, branded searches and direct visits often rise even when generic organic clicks fall. It is not proof, but a steady rise alongside growing AI impressions is a reasonable signal that you are being seen.
Layer 4: Manual checks and asking customers
Once a month, run the same 10 to 20 prompts your buyers would use ("best accountant for a small business in Mississauga", "[your product] vs [competitor]") in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Record whether you appear, what is said, and which pages are cited. Use a logged-out or private session where possible, since answers can be personalised and vary from run to run.
Finally, add "How did you hear about us?" to your contact and booking forms with "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" as an option, and pass the answer into your CRM. It is the only way to capture people who never clicked a link. If your forms already feed a CRM, store the answer as its own field so you can report on it next to deal value; a CRM integration can pass it through automatically.
Common mistakes when reading the numbers
- Treating Direct as "nothing". A jump in Direct traffic to deep service pages, not your home page, often hides untagged assistant visits.
- Comparing across the channel launch. The AI Assistant channel is new, so year-on-year channel comparisons will look like sudden growth that is partly reclassification.
- Judging by one prompt run. Assistants give different answers on different runs. Look at patterns across a month, not a single screenshot.
A simple monthly report
| Metric | Where | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| AI impressions, top pages | Search Console generative AI report | Rising, spread across service pages |
| AI Assistant sessions and conversions | GA4 | Rising, with conversion rate at or above organic |
| Branded search clicks | Search Console, brand filter | Stable or rising |
| Prompt visibility | Manual log | Mentioned, accurately, on core prompts |
| Self-reported AI source | Forms and CRM | Growing share of new enquiries |
If the prompt log shows you missing, start with how to get cited by ChatGPT. If Google's surfaces are the issue, review the October 2026 AI Mode update.
Key takeaways
- Search Console shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions, but their clicks stay mixed into normal Web data.
- GA4's AI Assistant channel counts clicks from standalone assistants and excludes Google's AI features.
- Branded search, direct traffic and landing-page trends capture some of the indirect effect.
- Manual prompt checks and a "how did you hear" field fill gaps no analytics tool covers.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see clicks from AI Overviews in Search Console?
Not separately, as of October 2026. Google counts them in the Web search type alongside regular results; the generative AI report shows impressions only.
Why is some ChatGPT traffic showing as Direct?
When an app or browser does not pass a referrer, analytics cannot tell where the visit came from, so it is recorded as Direct.
Are AI visibility tools worth paying for?
They can save time on prompt tracking. Treat their numbers as samples, since AI answers vary between runs, and remember Google's own guide says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking systems.
