ChatGPT vs Google in 2026: Where Customers Actually Look Before They Buy

ChatGPT vs Google in 2026: the latest published user numbers, how buyers split research between them, and where a business should invest to be found.

The short answer

In the ChatGPT vs Google question, buyers in 2026 use both. ChatGPT reports 1.2 billion weekly users, while Google says AI Mode alone has passed one billion monthly users on top of a search engine handling more than 5 trillion searches a year. People increasingly research and shortlist in AI assistants, then verify and buy through Google, Maps and the business's own website, so a business needs to be credible in both places.

ChatGPT vs Google: the published numbers

Only company-reported figures are reliable here, and the two firms measure different things, so compare carefully.

Weekly and monthly users are not the same measure, and a "user" is not a search. What the table does show is that both companies operate at a similar order of magnitude of people, and that Google's own AI features now reach as many people as ChatGPT. Alphabet also said on the same call that AI Mode is driving an incremental increase in overall Search queries, and its Q2 2026 results showed Google Search and other revenue up 17%. Google search is not shrinking; it is changing shape.

What people actually use ChatGPT for

The best independent look at usage is the NBER working paper "How People Use ChatGPT" (September 2025), written by OpenAI and academic researchers. It found that "Practical Guidance", "Seeking Information" and "Writing" together make up nearly 80% of conversations, and that non-work messages rose from 53% to more than 70% of usage. The authors conclude that much of ChatGPT's value comes from decision support.

Decision support is exactly what a buyer needs before choosing a supplier: what should I look for, what does this usually cost, what are the trade-offs between these options. The paper does not break out shopping or supplier research as its own category, so nobody can say from it exactly how many conversations are about buying. Still, the most common uses map neatly onto the early, research-heavy stages of a purchase, where a buyer is working out what good looks like before searching for a specific business.

Where buyers look, by stage

Four-stage buyer journey showing where AI assistants and Google each tend to be used: learn, shortlist, verify and act 1. Learn What do I need? 2. Shortlist Who should I consider? 3. The diagram is a pattern, not a law, but published data supports its shape:

  • Local services: BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey found 45% of US consumers used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier, while Google and Facebook remained bigger sources. We cover how to appear in those answers in local businesses in AI answers.
  • Retail: Adobe Analytics data reported by TechCrunch showed AI-referred traffic to US retail sites up 393% year on year in Q1 2026, and converting 42% better than non-AI traffic in March 2026, after converting 38% worse a year before.

Note that Adobe's figures describe growth rates and conversion, not share of total traffic. AI referrals are growing fast from a smaller base; Google still sends most sites far more visits.

How the split differs by business type

Local service businesses see AI most at the shortlist stage. Someone asks for "a reliable electrician in Burlington who does panel upgrades", gets three or four names, then checks reviews and calls. If you are not in that short list, strong Maps rankings still catch some of those buyers at the verify stage, but you have lost the first impression.

Online retailers see AI in product research and comparison. Adobe's data suggests these visitors arrive further along: they spend longer on site and convert better. Clear product data, honest specifications and visible return policies help both the assistant and the shopper.

B2B and professional services are where long, nuanced questions are common, which suits conversational tools. Buyers can ask an assistant to explain options, draft requirements and suggest vendors before ever visiting a website. Published thinking, worked examples and clear pricing models all give an assistant something solid to repeat.

What this means for where you invest

Keep Google fundamentals strong

Brand searches, Maps listings, reviews and fast, clear service pages are where many AI-researched buyers end up. Paid search still captures people ready to act, so well-run Google Ads campaigns remain worth judging on cost per lead.

Make your expertise quotable

To make the shortlist in an AI answer, your site needs specific, first-hand content: real prices or ranges, timelines, comparisons and clear statements of who you serve. Our guide to getting cited by ChatGPT covers the specifics.

Be consistent everywhere

If an assistant describes you one way and your Google listing another, the buyer notices at the verify stage. Align names, services and prices across every profile.

Measure both channels

Track AI assistant referrals and branded search together, as explained in how to measure AI search traffic, and ask new customers where they first heard of you.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT reports 1.2 billion weekly users; Google reports more than one billion monthly AI Mode users and 950 million monthly Gemini app users.
  • Most ChatGPT use is guidance and information-seeking, the research stage of buying.
  • Buyers often shortlist in AI tools and verify on Google, Maps and your website.
  • AI referral traffic converts well and is growing quickly, but Google still sends most visits.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT replacing Google search?

Not on current evidence. Google reports rising query volume and Search revenue growth in 2026 while ChatGPT grows too. Usage is spreading across both.

Do people trust AI recommendations?

Partly. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 40% of US consumers said they trust AI platforms for business recommendations and 42% trust them as much as traditional reviews, so many still check elsewhere before deciding.

Which matters more for B2B buyers?

No reliable public split exists for B2B purchasing as of October 2026. B2B research questions suit AI assistants well, but buyers still verify suppliers through search and referrals.
