Local Business AI Search: How ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode Answer "Near Me"
How ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode answer 'near me' questions, what 2026 data says about which local businesses get named, and how to show up more often.
The short answer
In local business AI search, ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode answer "near me" questions by combining map and listing data, reviews and business websites, then naming only two to four businesses. A September 2026 BrightLocal study found those names change often between runs. To show up more, you need a complete Google Business Profile, a website with clear service and location pages, consistent listings and a steady flow of genuine reviews.
How many people use AI to find local businesses
BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, a panel of 1,002 US adults published in February 2026, found that use of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools for local recommendations rose from 6% the previous year to 45%. That made AI the third most popular source of recommendations, behind Google and Facebook. 42% said they trust AI recommendations as much as traditional reviews.
Google is still the bigger channel, but customers now ask an assistant questions like "a reliable furnace repair company near Etobicoke open on weekends" and expect a short list back.
How each assistant answers a "near me" question
| Assistant | Where its local answers come from |
|---|---|
| Google AI Mode and AI Overviews | Google's index plus Business Profile and Maps data. Google's generative AI guide says Business Profiles can help businesses appear in AI responses. |
| Gemini in Google Maps (Ask Maps) | Launched March 2026 in the US and India; Google says it draws on more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million contributors. |
| ChatGPT | Web search results, business websites, directories and review sites. OpenAI has not published a full list of local data providers. |
Google is also moving from recommending to acting. Its agentic calling feature, available in the US, lets a shopper search "near me", answer a few questions and have Google phone nearby stores to check stock, then send a summary. If Google calls your business, someone or something needs to answer; an AI receptionist is one way to make sure those calls are not missed.

BrightLocal's September 2026 study ran about 200,000 non-branded local prompts across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews for roughly 1,300 business locations over 60 days. The findings are sobering.
- Fewer names. ChatGPT averaged 4.1 businesses per answer, AI Mode 3.5 and AI Overviews 2.5. With so few slots, being a near-miss earns nothing.
- Maps rank does not carry over. Google Maps mentioned a tracked business in 66% of searches; AI surfaces did so in 32% to 38%.
- Answers are unstable. Repeat runs of the same prompt overlapped only 21% to 33%. A business that appeared once reappeared in roughly half of later runs.
- The surfaces disagree. AI Mode and AI Overviews shared only 29.3% of named businesses; ChatGPT overlapped about 19% to 20% with either.
- Your website matters. Business websites made up 93% of unique cited domains and 42% of all citations. Google Business Profile accounted for about 28.5% of citations and Yelp about 9.5%.
- Storefronts did slightly better than service-area businesses: a 33.6% mention rate versus 29.4%.
How to show up more often in local business AI search
1. Treat your Business Profile as a source document
Choose the most accurate primary category, fill every relevant service, keep hours current (including holidays) and add real photos. Our Business Profile optimisation guide walks through each field.
2. Build one page per service and per location
Since business websites are the most-cited source type, give AI something specific to quote: what you do, where, for whom, typical price ranges or timelines, and credentials. A single "Services" page listing twelve things is much weaker than a page per core service.
3. Make your name, address and phone match everywhere
Inconsistent listings make it harder for any system to be sure two mentions refer to the same business. Audit the main directories in your category, not just the famous ones.
4. Earn steady, recent reviews
BrightLocal's survey found 82% of consumers read AI-generated review summaries. Those summaries are only as good as the reviews behind them. A system for asking every happy customer, described in our reviews guide, does more than any one-off push.
5. Get mentioned locally
Local news, community sites, associations and "best of" lists are third-party descriptions AI can draw on. See the wider local SEO priorities for the GTA.
6. Track prompts, not just rankings
BrightLocal recommends tracking AI visibility over time across platforms. Because answers vary run to run, measure the share of attempts you appear in, not a single result.
What this means by business type
Service-area businesses such as plumbers, cleaners and roofers start at a small disadvantage in the BrightLocal data, partly because there is no storefront address to anchor them. Compensate with pages for each town you genuinely serve, real job photos and reviews that mention locations. Our trades and home services page covers the wider picture.
Clinics and professional firms tend to be asked about credentials, specialties and whether they accept new clients. Put those answers in plain text on your site and keep them current.
Restaurants and retailers face questions about hours, menus, stock and price. Keep those in text, not images, and expect more automated enquiries as features like agentic calling spread.
Key takeaways
- 45% of US consumers in BrightLocal's 2026 survey used AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6%.
- AI answers name two to four businesses and change often, so visibility is a percentage, not a position.
- Business websites and Google Business Profiles are the most-cited sources for local AI answers.
- Strong Maps rankings help but do not guarantee AI mentions.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate strategy for ChatGPT and Google?
Mostly the same foundations work for both, but they agree on only about a fifth of businesses, so check each one separately when you track results.
Why does ChatGPT recommend businesses that are far away?
BrightLocal found ChatGPT's results spread much further than Google's: the radius covering 90% of its picks reached 287 km. Clear location pages and service-area details help it place you correctly.
Are these findings from Canada?
No. Both BrightLocal datasets cover the US. Canadian behaviour is likely similar, but no comparable Canadian study has been published as of October 2026.
