What a Shopify Store Costs in Canada in 2026: Plans, Fees, Themes and Builds

Shopify store cost in Canada for 2026: plan fees in CAD, payment rates, free vs paid themes, apps, and what a professional build adds to the budget.

The short answer

Shopify store cost in Canada has four layers. The plan runs $49 to $517 CAD a month on monthly billing as of October 2026 (less on annual), Shopify Payments takes 2.4% to 2.8% plus 30¢ on each online card sale, a theme is free or a one-time US$150 to US$420, and apps add a monthly line that quietly grows. A professional build sits on top: one Canadian agency's published 2026 ranges run from about $3,000 for a theme setup to $25,000 for a fully custom theme. The useful question is not "what does Shopify cost" but "which of these layers earns its keep for my store".

Shopify store cost, layer one: the plan

Shopify bills Canadian stores in Canadian dollars. These are the figures on Shopify's Canadian pricing page as of October 2026.

PlanMonthly billingAnnual billing (per month)Online card rate (Shopify Payments)Fee if you use another gateway
Basic$49$372.8% + 30¢2%
Grow$132$992.6% + 30¢1%
Advanced$517$3892.4% + 30¢0.6%
PlusFrom $3,400Not listed2.15% + 30¢0.2%

Two things in that table matter more than the headline price. First, the annual discount is large: Basic drops from $588 to $444 a year if you pay up front. Second, the "fee if you use another gateway" column is a penalty for not using Shopify Payments. If you take payments through a third-party provider on Basic, Shopify adds 2% on top of whatever that provider charges you. For most Canadian stores, Shopify Payments is the cheaper route, and it also unlocks Shop Pay and the built-in fraud analysis.

Point-of-sale is separate. If you also sell in person, the POS Pro add-on is listed at $119 CAD per month per location, and in-person Interac debit is 15¢ per transaction on Basic, Grow and Advanced.

Layer two: payment fees, the cost owners underestimate

Plan fees are fixed. Processing fees scale with sales, so they end up as the biggest Shopify line for any store doing real volume. A worked example makes the trade-off between plans visible.

Say you sell $10,000 a month at an average order of $80, which is 125 orders. On Basic, the card fee is 2.8% of $10,000 plus 125 times 30¢: $280 plus $37.50, or $317.50. On Grow the rate is 2.6%, so the same month costs $297.50. Grow saves you $20 in processing but costs $83 more in plan fee on monthly billing. You lose money by upgrading.

The break-even is arithmetic: the 0.2 percentage-point saving equals the $83 difference when monthly sales reach about $41,500. Below that, stay on Basic unless you need Grow's extra staff accounts or reporting. Above it, the upgrade pays for itself. Run the same sum for Advanced before you let anyone talk you into it; at $517 a month the processing saving alone needs well over $190,000 in monthly sales to cover the jump from Grow.

Remember that American Express and international cards carry higher rates (3.5% plus 30¢ on Basic), and that the percentage is charged on the full order, taxes and shipping included. Layer three: theme versus custom build

The Shopify Theme Store lists 24 free themes as of October 2026, including Dawn and the newer Horizon family. Paid themes shown on the store's front page range from US$150 to US$420 as a one-time purchase. A free theme is not a lesser product; the free themes are built by Shopify, kept current with new features, and more than adequate for a store with a modest catalogue and standard pages.

Where a theme stops being enough is when your products need a selling story the template cannot tell: configurators, bundles, comparison tables, quizzes, wholesale pricing, or a brand look that the theme's settings cannot reach. That is when you pay for customisation or a custom theme.

Published Canadian build prices are rare, so treat the following as one agency's price list rather than a market survey. Victoria Garland Creative, writing in March 2026, lists a template setup at $3,000 to $5,000 (three to four weeks), a customised premium theme at $6,000 to $9,000 (five to six weeks) and a fully custom theme at $10,000 to $25,000 (eight to twelve weeks or longer). Those tiers match what we see in the market: the price tracks how much of the theme is being replaced, not how pretty the result is.

One option to be wary of: a "headless" storefront, where a developer builds a separate front end and Shopify runs the back end. Shopify's own documentation says plainly that a headless storefront costs more to build and run than a theme, and that the merchant should have developers to maintain it after launch. It is a tool for large or unusual stores. We cover when it is and is not worth it in our guide to headless commerce for small businesses.

Layer four: apps, the line that creeps

Shopify does not publish an official app count. Third-party trackers cited by AdsX put the store at roughly 21,500 to 23,800 public apps in mid-2026, depending on how delisted apps are counted. Most are subscription products. Reviews, email capture, bundles, back-in-stock alerts, upsells, loyalty, subscriptions and translations each tend to come from a different vendor with its own monthly fee.

Two rules keep this layer honest. First, audit the app list every quarter and remove anything you cannot tie to revenue or saved hours. Second, remember that each app adds scripts to every page, and heavy pages hurt both conversion and Core Web Vitals. A store with 15 apps often converts worse than the same store with five, and pays more for the privilege. Several common app jobs (announcement bars, FAQs, size charts, simple bundles) can be built into a theme once instead of rented forever.

Two lanes of Shopify store costs: recurring monthly costs (plan fee, payment processing, apps, upkeep) and one-time costs (theme, build, migration, product content). What a professional build adds, and when it doesn't

A good agency or freelancer is not selling you pixels. The value is in the decisions a template cannot make for you:

  • Conversion structure. Collection filters that match how people shop, product pages that answer objections above the buy button, a checkout with the fewest fields the law allows. Shopify's median store converts only 1.4% of sessions into orders according to Littledata's October 2026 benchmark of 427 stores; the top 10% reach 3.6%. That gap is design and content, not luck. See 12 fixes for a Shopify store that is not converting.
  • Speed. Fewer apps, optimised images and a lean theme, measured against Core Web Vitals rather than a feeling.
  • Tax, shipping and payment setup done right the first time. Canadian GST/HST by province, shipping zones and rates, Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Our ecommerce launch checklist lists what to test before you open.
  • Tracking that works. GA4 and ad pixels configured through Shopify's customer events, with purchase values flowing correctly.
  • Migration without losing rankings. Redirects for every old URL, product data cleaned rather than copied.
  • Training and documentation so your team can add products and run promotions without calling anyone.

And when is a professional build the wrong purchase? If you have fewer than 20 products, no brand assets yet and you are still testing whether people want the thing, a free theme and a weekend of your own time is the right call. Spend the money after the first 100 orders, when you know what customers ask and where they drop off. Whatever route you take, budget for upkeep: our breakdown of website maintenance costs in Canada explains what ongoing care involves.

Our Shopify development work is quoted as a fixed price in writing, scoped against your catalogue and integrations rather than an hourly estimate, and you own the theme code and the store. That is a reasonable standard to hold any builder to.

Key takeaways

  • As of October 2026, Shopify's Canadian plans cost $49, $132 and $517 CAD a month on monthly billing; annual billing cuts roughly a quarter off.
  • Processing fees (2.4% to 2.8% plus 30¢) are the biggest line for any store with volume. Grow only beats Basic on fees above roughly $41,500 in monthly sales.
  • Free themes are genuinely good. Pay for customisation when your products need a selling story a template cannot tell.
  • Audit apps quarterly; each one costs money and page speed.
  • A professional build is worth it once you have proof of demand, and it should come with a fixed price, your own code and a migration plan.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Shopify store cost per month in Canada?

The plan alone is $49 (Basic), $132 (Grow) or $517 (Advanced) CAD a month on monthly billing as of October 2026, or $37, $99 and $389 on annual billing. Add card processing of 2.4% to 2.8% plus 30¢ per online sale and whatever apps you subscribe to. A small store on Basic with two or three apps typically lands between $100 and $200 a month before processing.

Is a paid Shopify theme worth it?

Often not at the start. Shopify's 24 free themes cover most product types and are maintained by Shopify. A paid theme (US$150 to US$420 one time) earns its price when it has a specific feature you need, such as a mega menu, lookbooks or advanced filtering, and it is still cheaper than paying a developer to add that feature to a free theme.

Do I need Shopify Plus?

Almost certainly not. Plus starts from $3,400 CAD a month and exists for high-volume brands that need checkout customisation, multiple stores and dedicated support. If you are reading a cost guide, Basic or Grow is where you belong, and you can move up without rebuilding.
