Shopify Store Not Converting? 12 Fixes Ranked by Effort, How to Measure Each

Shopify store not converting? Benchmarks to compare against, then 12 fixes ranked from an afternoon to a project, each with the metric that shows it worked.

The short answer

A Shopify store not converting usually has one of three problems: visitors never add to cart (product page and trust), they add to cart but never reach checkout (shipping cost shock), or they reach checkout and leave (friction and payment options). Shopify's median store turns 1.4% of sessions into orders; the top 10% manage 3.6% or better. The twelve fixes below are ranked by effort, and each comes with the one number that tells you whether it worked.

Is your Shopify store not converting, or converting normally?

Start with a benchmark, because "low" is relative. Littledata's October 2026 benchmark of 427 Shopify stores puts the median conversion rate at 1.4% and the mean at 1.9%. Anything above 2.6% is top 20%; above 3.6% is top 10%. Category matters: beauty and skincare stores sit at a 2.8% median, fashion at 1.2%, home and furniture at 0.9%. A furniture store at 1.1% is doing fine. A supplements store at 1.1% has a problem.

Then find where people leave. Shopify's analytics splits conversion into three steps: sessions that added to cart, sessions that reached checkout, and sessions that purchased. Write down all three for the last 30 days, split by mobile and desktop. The step with the biggest drop is where you start, and the fixes below are grouped so you can match them to it.

One caution before you touch anything: if your traffic is mostly cold social clicks, conversion will look poor no matter how good the store is. Check the conversion rate for returning visitors and for branded search separately. If those are healthy, the fix may be traffic quality, not the store.

Fixes 1 to 4: an afternoon each

1. Show the full cost before checkout. In Baymard Institute's research, extra costs for shipping, tax and fees are the top reason shoppers abandon a checkout, cited by 40%. Put a shipping estimate and your free-shipping threshold on the product page and cart, not just at the address step. In Canada this is also a legal matter: the Competition Bureau treats drip pricing, where mandatory fees appear late, as a concern under the Competition Act unless the charge is a government one such as sales tax. Measure: cart-to-checkout rate.

2. Turn on guest checkout and express payments. Baymard found 18% of abandoners left because the site wanted them to create an account. Make accounts optional and enable Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal so returning buyers can finish in two taps. Measure: checkout completion rate (reached checkout to purchased).

3. Fix the mobile product page above the fold. On a phone, the first screen should show the product image, price, variant picker and the add-to-cart button without scrolling. Many themes push the button below a wall of thumbnails. Measure: add-to-cart rate on mobile.

4. Uninstall apps you are not using. Every app adds scripts to every page. Remove the dead ones, then re-test speed. Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds are a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less and a Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits. Measure: LCP on your product template in PageSpeed Insights, before and after.

Fixes 5 to 8: about a week of work

5. Rewrite product descriptions to answer objections. The job of the copy is to answer the questions a shop assistant would be asked: will it fit, how fast does it arrive, what if it is wrong, what is it made of. Put delivery time and the return policy in the buy box, not in a footer link; Baymard lists slow delivery (20%) and an unsatisfactory return policy (13%) among the top abandonment reasons. Measure: product-view-to-add-to-cart rate on your ten best-selling products.

6. Move proof next to the button. Reviews with photos, a star rating in the buy box, "bought 1,200 times" counts from your real order data, press mentions. Proof at the bottom of the page is proof nobody sees. Measure: add-to-cart rate; also watch the review-widget click rate in your reviews app.

7. Make collections browsable the way people shop. Filters for the attributes customers actually use (size, material, price, use case), sensible sort defaults, and a search that handles plurals and typos. Look at your top on-site searches that return zero results. Measure: collection-page-to-product-page click rate, and the share of searches with no results.

8. Capture the email before the sale. A modest first-order incentive in exchange for an email gives you a second chance with the 98% who do not buy today. Keep the pop-up off the first screen and off checkout. In Canada, the consent you collect has to meet CASL rules, so word it as an explicit opt-in. Measure: email capture rate, then revenue from the welcome flow.

Fixes 9 to 12: proper projects

9. Rebuild for speed. If removing apps did not get you under the Core Web Vitals thresholds, the theme itself is the problem: oversized hero images, render-blocking scripts, third-party fonts, slider libraries. A lean theme or a careful refactor is a project, but it lifts every page at once. Our guide to measuring and fixing website speed explains the tools. Measure: all three Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile on mobile, plus overall conversion rate four weeks later.

10. Build recovery flows that match the drop-off. Shopify's built-in abandoned-checkout email is a start. A proper flow sends different messages to someone who abandoned at shipping (answer the cost question) than to someone who abandoned at payment (offer help, mention alternatives). Add browse abandonment for people who viewed a product three times. Measure: recovered revenue as a share of abandoned-checkout value.

11. Restructure the offer. Free-shipping thresholds set just above your average order, bundles that solve a whole problem, a "complete the look" module built from real co-purchase data. This is pricing work, not design work, and it moves average order value and conversion at the same time. Measure: revenue per session, which captures both.

12. Redesign around what sells. Most stores make 80% of revenue from a small share of products, yet the homepage and navigation treat every product equally. A redesign that leads with the proven winners, tells their story properly and simplifies everything else is the highest-effort fix on this list and often the highest-return one. It is worth doing with a builder who will put the price in writing and let you keep the theme code. Measure: overall conversion rate and revenue per session over a full month, compared with the same month a year earlier if you have seasonality.

How to measure without fooling yourself

Conversion rate is noisy. A store with 3,000 sessions a month and a 1.5% rate gets about 45 orders; a handful of orders either way moves the rate by a tenth of a point. So:

  • Take a four-week baseline before changing anything, split by device and by traffic source.
  • Change one thing per funnel step at a time, and give it two to four weeks.
  • Compare like with like: a sale week against a sale week, not against a quiet one.
  • Run a formal A/B test only when you have enough orders for a result to mean something, typically hundreds of conversions per variant. Below that, sequential before-and-after with a stable traffic mix is more honest than a test that can never reach significance.
  • Watch revenue per session alongside conversion rate so a fix that lifts conversion by discounting everything does not fool you.

Baymard estimates that the average large ecommerce site could lift conversion by about 35% through checkout design alone. Small stores rarely have Baymard's sample sizes, but the direction holds: most of the lift comes from removing reasons to leave, not from adding reasons to buy. Key takeaways

  • Benchmark first: Shopify's median conversion is 1.4%, and your category's median may be lower or higher.
  • Find the funnel step with the biggest drop in Shopify analytics and start there.
  • The cheapest fixes (full cost shown early, guest checkout, express pay, mobile buy box, fewer apps) address the top reasons Baymard found for abandonment.
  • Give each change two to four weeks and track revenue per session, not conversion rate alone.
  • A redesign is the last fix, not the first, and it should be built around the products that already sell.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good conversion rate for a Shopify store?

Littledata's October 2026 data puts the median at 1.4%, the top 20% at 2.6% and above, and the top 10% at 3.6% and above. Compare yourself with your category: beauty stores run higher (2.8% median) and furniture lower (0.9%). Also look at revenue per session, which accounts for order value.

Why do people add to cart but not buy?

The most common reasons in Baymard's research are extra costs appearing late (40%), slow delivery (20%), not trusting the site with card details (19%), forced account creation (18%) and a long or complicated checkout (17%). Show shipping early, allow guest checkout, add express payment options and keep the checkout short.

Should I switch themes to improve conversion?

Only after you have fixed the content and checkout issues, because a new theme with the same copy and the same shipping surprise converts the same. Switch when the current theme is slow beyond repair or cannot show the information customers need near the buy button.
